Coccidioidomycosis may range from a subclinical infection to one that is life-threatening. A severe infection is characterized by certain clinical findings.
Features of severe coccidioidomycosis:
(1) nonintentional weight loss > 10%
(2) intense night sweats lasting for > 3 weeks
(3) pulmonary infiltrates involving > 50% of 1 lung, or portions of both lungs
(4) prominent or persistent hilar adenopathy
(5) CF antibody titer > 1:16 by a reference method (or equivalent)
(6) failure to develop dermal hypersensitivity to coccidioidal antigen
(7) inability to work
(8) symptoms that persist > 2 months
