Description

A person who commits violence at a workplace may show a number of indications prior to the event.


Indications that an employee may become violent:

(1) increased substance abuse (drugs, alcohol)

(2) unexplained increase in absenteeism

(3) vague physical complaints

(4) decrease in attention to appearance and to hygiene

(5) depression

(6) social withdrawal

(7) resistance or overreaction to changes in policies and procedures

(8) repeated violations of company policies

(9) severe mood swings

(10) unstable, emotional responses

(11) explosive outbursts of anger or rage without apparent cause

(12) comments suggestive of suicidal ideation

(13) paranoia

(14) increased talks about problems at home

(15) talk of severe financial problems

(16) domestic problems spilling over into workplace

(17) talking about previous incidents of violence

(18) empathy with individuals committing violence

(19) talking about firearms, other dangerous weapons and/or violent crimes

 

Other indicators:

(1) suspected vandalism

(2) assault of a co-worker

(3) violence outside of the workplace

(4) grievances with co-workers
