Description

A Radioallergoabsorbent test (RAST) can be helpful in identifying IgE antibody directed against a specific allergen. It should only be ordered if it will provide useful clinical information.

Indications:

(1) for a person not responding to simple management and avoidance:

(1a) need to identify specific antigens for immunotherapy

(1b) need to identify the specific allergens involved when there are multiple possibilities

(2) to identify trigger(s) following an anaphylactic reaction

(3) to test for allergens which are not reliably evaluated by skin testing (food, chemicals, drugs)

(4) to evaluate a patient with a history of a severe allergic reaction during skin testing

(5) for the patient who refuses skin testing

(6) for the patient has extensive skin disease that makes skin testing impossible or unreliable

(7) to troubleshoot a patient who fails to respond to immunotherapy

(8) to test an infant for possible allergies

(9) to support the diagnosis of an IgE-mediate allergic reaction
