The American Urological Association (AUA) has listed indications for performing a transurethral resection (TURP) in a man with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).
Indications for a TURP:
(1) The patient is a reasonable surgical risk.
(2) The presence of prostatic obstruction.
(3) The patient has either 1 item in group A or 2 items in group B.
Group A - The presence of:
(1) urinary retention
(2) intractable symptoms
(3) recurrent or persistent urinary tract infection (UTI)
Group B - The presence of::
(1) documented post-voiding residual urine
(2) pathophysiological changes of kidneys, ureters or urinary bladder
(3) urinary flow rate that is:
(3a) abnormally low
(3b) normal but with an abnormally high voiding pressure
