Description

Monica et al reviewed indications for the early diagnosis of cerebral palsy (CP). Various indications exist, depending on age and circumstances. The authors are from the University of Sydney in Australia.


Patient selection: neonate or young infant

 

Triggers for suspecting cerebral palsy:

(1) preterm at birth

(2) encephalopathy

(3) birth defect

(4) intra-uterine growth retardation

(5) other neurological risk factors or findings

(6) parental concern

 

If one or more of these findings is positive, then an examination is warranted.

 

Examination:

(1) review medical history

(2) Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination

(3) MRI of the brain

(4) motor test (Test of Infant Motor Performance; Prechtl Qualitative Assessment of General Movements)
