Markiewicz-Kijewska et al identified infants with a giant hepatic hemangioma or vascular malformation who are candidates for urgent liver transplantation. The authors are from the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw.
Patient selection: infant with a giant hepatic hemangioma or vascular malformation (ages 1 to 6 months)
Indications for urgent liver transplantation:
(1) failure of conventional therapy (pharmacological, embolization, surgical ligation)
(2) both of the following:
(2a) high output heart failure with hemodynamic insufficiency
(2b) multi-organ failure
where:
• All patients developed right heart failure.
• Multi-organ failure usually included hepatic failure.
