Description

Maak et al listed indications for performing arthroscopic meniscus repair on a patient. The authors are from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Arthroscopic surgery is indicated if all of the following are present:

(1) The consequences of meniscal injury negatively impact the patient (inability to perform activities of daily living, impaired work or physical performance).

(2) The patient has signs and symptoms of a damaged meniscus (limited range of motion, pain on squatting, joint effusion, tenderness, etc).

(3) The patient has failed to respond to conservative management that has been carefully adhered to.

(4) Other causes of knee pain have been excluded by appropriate studies.

After the decision has been made to perform arthroscopic surgery then the surgeon must decide whether to repair or excise damaged tissue.
