Li et al outlined the indications for allergen immunotherapy for a patient with allergic rhinitis and/or allergic asthma. The authors are from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
Indications for allergen immunotherapy:
(1) symptoms of allergic rhinitis and/or asthma after natural exposure to aeroallergens
(2) presence of clinically relevant specific IgE antibodies
(3) one or more of the following:
(3a) poor response to pharmacotherapy
(3b) poor effectiveness of allergen avoidance
(3c) unacceptable adverse effects from medications
(3d) patient's desire to avoid long-term drug therapy
(3e) patient's desire to control costs associated with long-term therapy
(3f) presence of both allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma
