Description

Toxoplasmosis is usually a self-limited infection in an immunocompetent patient and does not require therapy. Khanna et al listed conditions which should prompt therapy in a patient with toxoplasmic retinitis in order to prevent loss of central vision.

Indications for antimicrobial/antiparasitic therapy in a patient with toxoplasmic retinitis:

(1) retinitis that lasts more than 4 weeks

(2) the presence of a lesion near the optic nerve

(3) the presence of a lesion near or involving a large retinal vessel

(4) the presence of a lesion that has resulted in hemorrhage

(5) the presence of a lesion within the temporal arcade

(6) the presence of vitreal inflammation with a drop in visual acuity >= 2 lines

(7) any other retinal lesion that could cause loss of central vision
