Description

Jordon et al evaluated pediatric patients with pertussis admited to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). They identified risk factors for admission and a need for more aggressive management. The authors are from Hospital Snt Joan de Deu and Universitat de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain.


 

Patient selection: pediatric patient with pertussis

 

Indications for PICU admission - one or both of the following:

(1) respiratory distress (tachypnea with respiratory rate "up to" 75th percentile for age, tachycardia with heart rate "up to" 75th percentile for age, use of respiratory muscles)

(2) 2 or more risk factors (below)

 

Risk factors:

(1) cyanosis

(2) unvaccinated status (no doses of pertussis vaccine administered)

(3) post-crisis apnea

(4) primary apnea (absence of respiratory effort > 20 seconds, heart rate < 80 beats per minute, cyanosis and pallor)
