Grever et al listed indications for treating a patient with hairy cell leukemia (HCL). The authors are from multiple institutions in North America, Europe and Israel.
Patient selection: hairy cell leukemia
Indications for therapy:
(1) one or more cytopenias (see below)
(2) symptomatic splenomegaly or other organomegaly
(3) progressive lymphocytosis
(4) progressive lymphadenopathy
(5) unexplained weight loss > 10% over past 6 months
(6) excessive fatigue
Cytopenias include:
(1) hemoglobin < 11 g/dL
(2) platelet count < 100,000 per µL
(3) absolute neutrophil count < 1,000 per µL
