Description

Cummins et al identified indications for palliative surgery in a patient with metastatic colorectal carcinoma. The authors are from the University of Mississippi in Jackson.

Patient selection: incurable metastatic colorectal carcinoma

Indications for palliative surgery:

(1) bowel obstruction

(2) active bleeding

(3) chronic anemia from gastrointestinal bleeding that requires blood transfusion

(4) intractable pain

(5) bowel perforation

(6) other distressing symptoms amenable to surgery

The goal is to achieve relief from a distressing symptom without performing extensive surgery.
