Clayman et al listed the indications for postoperative radiation therapy in a patient with a squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. The authors are from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Indications for postoperative radiation therapy:
(1) presence of perineural spread
(2) extracapsular spread from a lymph node metastasis
(3) multiple lymph node metastases (more than 1)
(4) direct invasion into bone
Exception: A patient with a history of previous treatment with external beam radiation to the site did not receive repeat therapy.
