Signs suggesting systemic reaction:
(1) hyperglycemia and/or ketoacidosis in a diabetic
(2) tachycardia and tachypnea
(3) confusion or altered mental status
(4) shock
Local findings in the area of infection:
(1) evidence of dermal gangrene
(2) blistering (bullae formation), bronzing, cyanosis, and/or dusky discoloration of the skin
(3) severe pain
(4) spreading areas of anesthesia
(5) thin, reddish drainage oozing from the area, with undermined wound edges
(6) cellulitis with extensive surrounding edema
(7) cellulitis that progresses despite adequate antibiotic administration
(8) cellulitis affecting a surgical wound
(9) cellulitis affecting a hematoma
(10) an abscess with multiple tracts
(11) crepitus on palpation
(12) presence of soft tissue gas on X-ray, ultrasound or CT scan
(13) a foul smelling discharge
