Vertebroplasty involves injection of bone cement into a vertebral fracture by an interventional radiologist. It may be considered in a patient with an osteoporotic fracture if certain criteria are met.
Indications for considering vertebroplasty - all of the following:
(1) severe symptoms (pain and/or disability)
(2) reasonable attempt at medical management
(3) exclusion of other diagnoses (osteomyelitis, cancer, etc)
(4) vertebral body height >= 33% of original height
(5) vertebral body NOT significantly destroyed
(6) no allergy to the bone cement
