Description

Colchicine can be a useful drug in the management of a patient with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). Not all patients will experience a benefit, and the benefit may be greater in some patients than others.


 

Reasons to consider the use of colchicines in a patient with FMF:

(1) to prevent an attack

(2) to reduce symptoms during an attack

(3) to avoid unnecessary surgery or imaging studies

(4) to prevent amyloidosis

(5) to treat amyloidosis

 

If colchicines is used, then the following need to be emphasized:

(1) compliance with therapy, which is often lifelong

(2) careful dosing, in order to avoid adverse effects
