The drug is approved by the FDA for treatment of:
(1) a woman with postmenopausal osteoporosis at high risk for fracture
(2) a male with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture
(3) during sustained therapy with glucocorticoids AND high risk for fracture
The drug has also been used to treat:
(1) primary or secondary hypoparathyroidism
(2) pseudohypoparathyroidism
(3) neonatal hypocalcemia due to hypoparathyroidism (see cautions)
Contraindications and cautions for use:
(1) hypersensitivity to the drug or its excipients
(2) history of osteosarcoma
(3) risk factors for osteosarcoma (Paget's disease, radiation therapy to skeleton, presence of open epiphyses in child or adolescent)
