Pregabalin (Lyrica) can be an affective therapy for chronic pain in certain patients.
Approved indications for pregabalin:
(1) pain in diabetic neuropathy
(2) post-herpetic neuralgia
(3) fibromyalgia
Pregabalin has been used in many other conditions associated with pain. It may be an attractive agent if:
(1) the patient has concurrent anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
(2) the patient has concurrent partial onset seizures (as an adjunctive agent)
(3) the patient is on chronic opioid therapy and a lower dose of the opioid is desired
(4) the patient is on chronic NSAID therapy and a lower dose of the NSAID is desired
(5) the patient has more than one kind of chronic pain and the pain has been difficult to control
