A patient who has ingested methanol should be treated if certain findings are present.
A person should be treated for methanol poisoning if one or more of the following are present:
(1) plasma methanol concentration >= 6.2 mmol/L (>= 20 mg/dL)
(2) both of the following:
(2a) documented exposure of methanol
(2b) osmolal gap > 10 mOsm per kg water
(3) both of the following:
(3a) suspected exposure of methanol
(3b) 2 or 3 of the following:
(3b1) osmolal gap > 10 mOsm per kg water
(3b2) serum total carbon dioxide concentration < 20 mmol/L (metabolic acidosis)
(3b3) arterial pH < 7.3
