Description

Women who are sexually active should be screened for Chlamydia trachomatis infection in order to detect infection early and to prevent the long term complications.


 

During routine pelvic examinations:

(1) mucopurulent cervicitis, any age

(2) < 20 years of age if sexually active:

(2a) if sexual activity since the last test has been limited to a single mutually monogamous partner, then screen annually.

(2b) if not, then screen at any pelvic examination

(3) 20 - 24 years of age should be screened annually if either one of the following is present:

(3a) The patient admits inconsistent use of barrier contraceptives, OR

(3b) The patient has had a new or more than 1 sex partner in the last 3 months

(4) > 24 years of age should be screened annually if both of the following are present:

(4a) The patient admits inconsistent use of barrier contraceptives, AND

(4b) The patient has had a new or more than 1 sex partner in the last 3 months.

• A routine pelvic examination includes prenatal and family planning visits.

 

During special circumstances:

(1) on admission to a detention facility

(2) at presentation for an induced abortion
