Equations for predicting energy expenditure may give inaccurate result for some patients. Indirect calorimetry should be considered for patients who deviate significantly from the norm..


Indications for indirect calorimetry:

(1) body weight at an extreme (severely underweight, morbid obesity)

(2) abnormal fluid retention (peripheral edema, ascites)

(3) difficulty weaning from mechanical ventilation

(4) organ transplant recipient

(5) hypermetabolic state (sepsis, burns, pancreatitis, ARDS)

(6) hypometabolic state

(7) not meeting nutrition goals

(8) pediatric patient with malnutrition or metabolic disorder

(9) cancer patient
