A traveler should be vaccinated or receive chemoprophylaxis against influenza if high risk or if traveling during a high-risk period.
Patient selection: traveler
High-risk populations:
(1) adult > 65 years of age
(2) infant or child from 6 to 23 months of age
(3) significant chronic comorbid condition
(4) immunocompromised
(5) pregnancy
High-risk times:
(1) tropics any time of the year
(2) cruise passenger any time of the year
(3) member of organized tour group any time of the year
(4) travel in a temperature zone during influenza season (typically winter)
If a patient cannot be vaccinated, then chemoprophylaxis should be considered.
