Description

Home oxygen therapy (HOT) may be beneficial for a pediatric patient with pulmonary disease.


Goal: to maintain oxygen saturation (by pulse oximetry) in an acceptable range

 

Indications for home oxygen therapy:

(1) cystic fibrosis with severe chronic hypoxemia

(2) cystic fibrosis with both mild chronic hypoxemia and dyspnea on exertion

(3) bronchopulmonary dysplasia complicated by hypoxemia

(4) sleep-disordered breathing with severe nocturnal hypoxemia, if unable to tolerate positive airway pressure therapy

(5) sickle cell disease with severe chronic hypoxemia

(6) pulmonary hypertension without congenital heart disease AND chronic hypoxemia

(7) interstitial lung disease with severe chronic hypoxemia

(8) interstitial lung disease with mild chronic hypoxemia and (dyspnea or desaturation) on exertion

(9) interstitial lung disease with mild chronic hypoxemia and desaturation during sleep

 

Patients who may be candidates for home oxygen therapy:

(1) pulmonary hypertension with congenital heart disease AND chronic hypoxemia, if approved by pediatric pulmonologist or cardiologist with expertise in pulmonary hypertension
