Most patients with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura (HSP) are adequately managed as outpatients. Sometimes it may be necessary to admit the patient to the hospital for care.
Indications for admission to the hospital for a patient with HSP:
(1) unable to maintain adequate hydration with oral intake
(2) severe abdominal pain
(3) significant gastrointestinal bleeding
(4) other gastrointestinal complications (intussusception, bowel ischemia, etc)
(5) altered mental status
(6) severe arthritis preventing ambulation and/or self-care
(7) renal insufficiency
In addition, therapy can result in adverse drug effects that can be significant.
(1) NSAIDS
(2) corticosteroids
