Description

Some patients with a history of anaphylactic reactions should carry an auto-injector for epinephrine (adrenaline) for immediate treatment following allergen exposure. McLean-Toke et al identified criteria for selecting these patients.


 

Criteria for selecting patients to carry an auto-injectors - all of the following:

(1) exposure to allergen not always avoidable

(2) able to understand how to use of the auto-injector AND physically able to use the device

(3) one or both of the following:

(2a) history of severe allergic reaction with respiratory difficulty or hypotension

(2b) asthma reaction to trace allergen exposure AND repeated exposure to allergen likely AND emergency medical care not readily available

 

Criteria for patients who are not candidates to carry an auto-injector - any of the following:

(1) exposure to allergen always avoidable

(2) localized (non-systemic) allergic reactions only

(3) no history of severe allergic reaction AND low risk (not high risk)

(4) unable to understand or make use of the device
