The Index of Rapid Shallow Breathing (aka Rapid Shallow Breathing Index or RSBI) can be used to evaluate a mechanical ventilated patient prior to extubation.
Parameters:
(1) respiratory rate in the number of breaths per minute
(2) tidal volume (VT) in liters
index =
= (number of breaths per minute) / (tidal volume in liters)
Interpretation:
• Yang et al found that an index <= 105 breaths per minute per liter was seen in those who were successfully weaned while > 105 indicated weaning failure.
• Frutos-Vivar et al correlated the index with the rate of reintubation.
