Brewin et al reported an index for identifying ineffective erythropoiesis in patients with sickling hemoglobinopathies. The authors are from King's College London.
Patient selection: sickle cell disease
Parameters:
(1) serum soluble transferrin receptor in nmol/L
(2) absolute reticulocyte count in 10^9/L
index of ineffective erythropoiesis = IoIE =
= (serum transferrin receptor) / (absolute reticulocyte count)
Interpretation:
• The upper limit of normal is 0.28.
• An index > 0.28 reflects ineffective erythropoiesis.
