Description

Therapy with gentamicin or other aminoglycosides can result in increased urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.

Site of action: distal convoluted tubules

Electrolytes affected may include:

(1) calcium

(2) potassium

(3) potassium

(4) sodium

For most patients this has little clinical impact. It may have an effect on:

(1) sick preterm neonates

(2) frequent or prolonged use with high doses

(3) other drugs or conditions associated with electrolyte wasting

A patient who is symptomatic or who has a significant decrease in plasma concentration may require an intervention.
