Therapy with gentamicin or other aminoglycosides can result in increased urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.
Site of action: distal convoluted tubules
Electrolytes affected may include:
(1) calcium
(2) potassium
(3) potassium
(4) sodium
For most patients this has little clinical impact. It may have an effect on:
(1) sick preterm neonates
(2) frequent or prolonged use with high doses
(3) other drugs or conditions associated with electrolyte wasting
A patient who is symptomatic or who has a significant decrease in plasma concentration may require an intervention.
