A deployed or training soldier can have very high energy requirements. If food intake is inadequate, then weight loss and deficits can appear over time.
Changes:
(1) loss of body weight
(2) loss of body fat
(3) loss of fat-free mass
Causes of inadequate caloric intake:
(1) energy consumption greater than that provided in rations
(2) intentional underfeeding as training stressor
(3) intentional food reduction to reduce pack weight and to make space for other supplies
Causes of negative protein balance:
(1) inadequate protein intake
(2) inadequate total caloric and carbohydrate intake
A critical amount of dietary caloric intake must be consumed if dietary protein is to be effectively used to maintain muscle mass.
