Description

A woman with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) may have impaired fertility.


 

Factors associated with impaired fertility:

(1) amyloidosis

(2) multiple febrile episodes

(3) pelvic adhesions

(4) being untreated (not being treated with colchicine)

(5) oligomenorrhea (which may reflect ovulatory dysfunction)

 

A woman with impaired fertility can often achieve pregnancy with in vitro fertilization or other method.

 

For a woman who does become pregnant there may be an increased risk for miscarriage especially if the woman experiences frequent febrile episodes.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) male infertility

(2) polycystic ovary syndrome
