Description

Placing 2 central lines that have opposite functions too close together can result in poor drug delivery.

Situation – the patient has 2 central lines:

(1) cone being used to infuse a drug

(2) one being used for continuous renal replacement or apheresis

Kam et al demonstrated that if the tip of the infusing catheter was near the tip of the withdrawing catheter (less than 1 cm away) then very little drug reached the systemic circulation.

A distance between the two catheter tips > 2 cm was required to avoid this effect.
