Description

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the impact of smoking on hemoglobin concentrations. Smoking may elevate a person's hemoglobin above that seen if the person was a nonsmoker.


 

Patient selection: smoker

 

Parameters:

(1) packs of cigarettes smoked per day

(2) measured hemoglobin in g/L

Smoking Status

Reduce Measured Hemoglobin

0.5 to 1.0 packs per day

0.3 g/L

1.0 to 2.0 packs per day

0.5 g/L

> 2 packs per day

0.7 g/L

 

A more significant increase may be due to erythrocytosis.
