Intravenous iron therapy can impact magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Effect of intravenous iron on MRI:
(1) shortening effect on T1, T2 and T2*, with reduction of signal intensity
(2) can mask enhancement
(3) can mimic iron overload conditions (hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis)
Factors affecting impact:
(1) half-life of the iron product in the circulation
(2) amount of intravenous iron present at the time of MRI
Patients at risk:
(1) dialysis patient
(2) severe iron deficiency anemia
