Description

Some people prefer smoking cigarettes containing menthol. There are also concerns about people who use flavored vaping products.

Menthol in cigarettes:

(1) may cause some people to start smoking and to become nicotine dependent

(2) may make it more difficult for a person to stop smoking since the person finds it pleasurable

(3) may have a greater negative impact in certain vulnerable populations

Banning menthol in a region with larger percentage of people smoke menthols can be effective in significantly reducing overall tobacco consumption.

Short-term toxicity studies indicate that the menthol does not cause acute toxicity but the long-term effects remain uncertain.
