Hung et al evaluated the impact of end-stage renal disease and cirrhotic complications on the survival of patients with cirrhosis. The authors are from Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital in Taiwan.
Patient selection: cirrhosis with end-stage renal disease
Major complications of cirrhosis (excluding hepatocellular carcinoma) include:
(1) ascites
(2) hepatic encephalopathy
(3) bleeding esophageal varices
Risk factors for mortality in the 3 years after a first hospitalization:
(1) older age
(2) male sex
(3) ascites
(4) hepatic encephalopathy
(5) bleeding esophageal varices
(6) hepatocellular carcinoma
(7) end-stage renal disease
