Description

Chaigne et al evaluated the impact of disease activity on the quality of life (QOL) of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. The authors are from multiple institutions in Switzerland.

Patient selection: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Measure of QOL: SF-36

Parameters:

(1) SELENA-SLEDAI (from 0 to 105; the range for SLEDAI-2K is the same; a score >= 4 is associated with some disease activity)

(2) physician global assessment (PGA, from 0 to 3)

(3) ESR in mm in first hour

Increases in these parameters are associated with decline in QOL.

Other factors impacting QOL:

(1) low serum complement

(2) high titer of anti-dsDNA

(3) active lupus nephritis

(4) musculoskeletal involvement

Factors impacting QOL:

(1) fatigue

(2) pain

(3) number and severity of organ dysfunction

(4) neuropsychiatric symptoms

(5) drug adverse effects
