Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic disorder that can be a challenge to diagnose. Immunostaining can distinguish it from other dermal infiltrating tumors.
Synonym: CD4+CD56+ hematodermic neoplasm
Immunostaining results that distinguish BPDCN from leukemia cutis (Cronin et al):
(1) myeloperoxidase negative
(2) CD4 positive
(3) CD56 positive
(4) CD123 positive
(5) T cell leukemia 1 (Tcl-1) positive
Additional stains that may be helpful:
(1) CD43 positive
(2) CXCL12 (positivity associated with leukemia and poor prognosis)
