Description

A patient with tuberculosis and HIV disease may undergo the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is started.

Clinical features of IRIS associated with tuberculosis:

(1) fever

(2) cough and/or dyspnea

(3) abdominal pain

(4) lymphadenopathy

(5) hepatosplenomegaly

(6) progression in radiologic changes in the chest X-ray

(7) onset of new symptoms or progression of central nervous system disease

Timing of antituberculous therapy and HAART is important for optimizing the patient's outcome.
