Some patients with celiac disease will develop an IgA nephropathy, which may be its sole manifestation, at least initially.
Clinical features:
(1) presence of IgA nephropathy (glomerular IgA deposits)
(2) variable presence of gastrointestinal findings of celiac disease
(3) variable presence of extra-gastrointestinal findings of celiac disease
(4) improvement in nephropathy after several weeks on strict gluten-free diet
Gastrointestinal findings may include:
(1) unexplained abdominal pain
(2) nausea
(3) diarrhea or constipation
(4) weight loss
(5) abdominal distension
(6) bloating
Extra-gastrointestinal findings may include:
(1) iron deficiency anemia
(2) elevated serum transaminases
