The International Classification of Disease (ICD) provides criteria for burnout.
Burnout arises from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
ICD-11 code: QD85
Criteria for burnout:
(1) an occupational "phenomenon"
(2) all of the following
(2a) feelings of energy depletion and exhaustion
(2b) increased mental distance from occupation and/or feelings of negativism/cynicism related to job
(2c) reduced professional efficacy
where:
• Burnout is not recognized as a disease, illness or health condition, even though it can be disabling (criterion 2c).
