A patient with hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) may deteriorate and die if exposed to fructose, sucrose or sorbitol. The risk is particularly high for a person not known to have HFI.
Sources of fructose, sucrose and sorbitol:
(1) parenteral nutrition
(2) intravenous infusions
(3) medications
Complications of an exposure may include:
(1) liver failure
(2) renal failure
(3) coma
(4) severe hypoglycemia
(5) metabolic acidosis
