The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) reported criteria for the diagnosis of nociplastic pain. This was previously referred to as central sensitization pain.
Patient selection: chronic pain
Criteria for possible nociplastic pain - all of the following:
(1) duration >= 3 months
(2) regional distribution rather than discrete
(3) pain cannot be entirely explained by nociceptive or neuropathic mechanisms
(4) signs of evoked pain hypersensitivity in the region of pain
Evoked pain hypersensitivity may encompass:
(1) mechanical allodynia
(2) heat or cold allodynia
(3) painful after-sensations
Criteria for probable nociplastic pain:
(1) possible nociplastic pain
(2) at least one comorbidity:
(2a) increased sensitivity to sound, light or odors
(2b) sleep disturbances with frequent nocturnal awakening
(2c) fatigue
(2d) cognitive problems
Nociplastic pain may be mixed with nociceptive and/or neuropathic pain.
