Description

Hypopyon can occur in a patient with leukemia or lymphoma. It may be the presenting sign during initial onset or recurrence.

Hypopyon in leukemia or lymphoma may be referred to as pseudohypopyon in order to distinguish it from inflammatory hypopyon.

Hypopyon has been described for many types of leukemia or lymphoma and may be unilateral or bilateral.

In acute leukemia it may be an indication of meningeal involvement.

The fluid in the anterior chamber may be white or tinged with blood.

An aspirate of aqueous humor is usually positive for malignant cells consistent with leukemia or lymphoma.

Differential diagnosis:

(1) inflammatory hypopyon associated with opportunistic infection or drug reaction
