Hyponasal speech occurs when there is no or little air passing through the nose during speech.
Synonym: rhinolalia clausa
Mechanism: nasal or nasopharyngeal obstruction
Causes of hyponasal speech may include:
(1) enlarged adenoids
(2) rhinitis
(3) nasal trauma with deviated septum
(4) nasal polyps
(5) iatrogenic stenosis of the nares
(6) pneumomediastinum with retropharyngeal emphysema
(7) Kartagener syndrome
(8) patulous Eustachian tubes
(9) abnormal velopharyngeal closure
