Description

A patient with multiple sclerosis can die as a result of hyperthermia triggered by exposure to heat or anything increasing the body temperature.


Triggers might include:

(1) hot bath

(2) sauna

(3) exposure to sunlight, including sunbathing

(4) febrile illness

(5) exertion

(6) occupational heat exposure

(7) extremely hot weather

 

Precedents may include:

(1) exercise intolerance

(2) altered level of consciousness on exposure to heat

(3) neurologic symptoms or sequelae after bathing, including immobilization

(4) less severe episodes of hyperthermia

 

The patient may present in hyperthermia, with failure to rescue.
