Description

Many drugs of abuse can cause severe hyperthermia. In some cases the hyperthermia may become "malignant" with rhabdomyolysis, hyperkalemia, acute renal failure and DIC.


Drugs of abuse that can cause severe hyperthermia:

(1) cocaine

(2) MDMA (ecstasy)

(3) opiates and opioids (morphine, fentanyl, etc)

(4) amphetamine and methamphetamine

(5) LSD

(6) 5-methoxy-diisopropyltryptamine

(7) piperazine compounds ("club drugs")

(8) synthetic cathinones

 

Mechanisms of hyperthermia include:

(1) serotonin syndrome

(2) sympathomimetic syndrome
