Description

Beijers et al reported the HOSPITALL score to predict all-cause hospitalization in community-dwelling older adults with COPD. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from preventive measures to improve health. The authors are from Maastricht University, University of Pittsburgh, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, Wake Forest University, Cornell University, Weill Cornell Medical College, University of California San Francisco and the National Institute for Aging.

HOSPITALL is an acronym for: Heart and vascular disease (H), objectively measured lower extremity dysfunction (O), systemic inflammation (S) , dyspnea (P), impaired renal function (I), tobacco exposure (T), all cause hospitalization (ALL)

Patient selection: COPD, from 70-79 years, community-dwelling

Outcome: 9-year risk of all-cause hospitalization

Parameters:

(1) heart and vascular disease

(2) short physical performance battery (SPPB)

(3) CRP in µg/mL (mg/L)

(4) dyspnea

(5) chronic kidney disease

(6) tobacco exposure
