Friedant et al developed several simple scores for predicting hospital-acquired infection (HAI) after an acute ischemic stroke. One of these scores identified risk for any HAI. The authors are from Tulane University, Columbia University, University of Alabama, University of Pennsylvania, COERE, and CERED.
Patient selection: acute ischemic stroke
Outcome: hospital-acquired infection including pneumonia, bacteremia and urinary tract infection (UTI)
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) history of diabetes mellitus
(3) baseline NIHSS

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 7
• A score >= 4 was associated with an odds ratio of 5.7 for infection.
