The horsefly is a large fly. Female horseflies bite mammals to drink the blood.
Scientific name: Tabanus bovinus
Bites are on accessible skin, often the neck, shoulders and upper chest.
Features of a bite:
(1) round, erythematous plaque with a central point that marks where the bite occurred
(2) variable number of smaller satellite lesions
(3) painful at the bite site
Occasionally a patient may have an allergic reaction to horsefly saliva.
A topical corticosteroid cream is an effective therapy.
