Hookworm larvae can cause a folliculitis in addition to cutaneous larva migrans.
A common risk factor is beach exposure in the tropics or subtropics.
Features of the rash:
(1) severe pruritis, which is often worse at night
(2) papules and/or papulopustules
Some patients may show eosiniophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF).
Some patient may have a unilateral rash that mimics the rash of Herpes zoster.
The affected patient usually responds quickly to a single oral dose of ivermectin.
Differential diagnosis:
(1) bacterial folliculitis
(2) scabies
